As one of the first plays of its time to feature a queer character whom the audience empathises with, The Children’s Hour by Lillian Hellman is a historically significant landmark. Despite being banned in several locations for its portrayal of a lesbian character, it received positive reviews, reflecting the beginnings of a slow but crucial change in the perception of queer media in the first half of the 20th century.
