Description: After his crucifixion, Christ descends into Hell where the souls have been awaiting his coming for more than four thousand years. He does not go there to suffer, but to wage battle: to free the righteous souls — Adam, Eve, the patriarchs, and the prophets — whom Satan has held captive for millennia. Satan claims dominion over the dead, supposing that Christ’s death places him under his jurisdiction. The conflict is rhetorical: the one whom Satan believed defeated has come to break down the gates of Hell. The patriarchs, on the threshold of the redemption they have awaited for so long, oscillate between anguish and the hope of encountering the Lord.
