Description: The Crucible is a dramatising of the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which 19 people were hanged. Written during the wave of McCarthyism, it portrays the struggle for integrity amidst a climate of mass hysteria and ruthless judgement.

When a group of girls are caught dancing in the woods, they fend off punishment by accusing others of witchcraft. What starts as self-preservation spirals into mass hysteria: as accusations fly, the court demands confessions, and the innocent face a brutal choice: lie and live, or tell the truth and hang.

Miller’s writing is as beautiful as it is powerful and has captivated audiences since its first staging in 1953. Many claim it is the greatest play of the 20th century (or even of all time…?). Its characters and lines are so iconic, many actors lick their lips at the roles... (think John Proctor's 'Because it is my name!' moment). Our original production of Arthur Miller’s towering classic will harness the Pilch’s intimacy to create an unforgettably visceral and intense experience.

This play has a big cast, with both large and small roles. Yet the number of lines does not track the roles’ significance - some of the play’s most moving and important roles have fewer lines. It is a great opportunity for you if you are busy next term but still seek to do some serious acting.

We encourage everybody - especially those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in Oxford drama - to apply.
