Synopsis

A doctor from America comes to a small island off the coast of the British Isles to stay with his cousin, Evelyn. He meets the various people and learns their stories and of their troubled pasts. Tommy and Evelyn try to make their relationship work, while Gladys helps her son Dai come to terms with what he’s done. As a year passes the Doctor wrestles with his duty to go home, receiving two visits from a friend from home, Paul. He at last decides to stay on the island, but not before he has witnessed the decline of Dennis who sinks deeper into his alcoholism and the stories in his head and eventually into suicidal thoughts. The other characters try to go on living with their pasts, but we may doubt whether to a purposeful end as we hear what has befallen after the death of their friend.

Characters

Doctor George Montgomery: A middle aged man, anxious and shy at first but opens up and learns from Dennis about how to enjoy his freedom

Dennis Doyle: A young insightful storyteller, often away with the fairies

Evelyn Rowe: George's cousin, she believes in responsibility, but deep down she is still a caring and supportive person

Tommy Shaw: A middle aged man, a nihilistic outlook that permeates much of his humour.

Gladys Morgan: a gossip and sarcastic woman who loves a laugh, though she is fiercely loyal

Dai Morgan: Gladys' son, a socially awkward and quiet man. He finds a way to open up by the end of the play, but never loses his nervousness

Paul Lambert: a 'friend' of the doctor, cold and blunt, always pushing his agenda to get the doctor to return home.
