Description: Am a Camera by John Van Druten centres on Chris, an English writer living in 1930s Berlin, who acts as both narrator and "camera", observing the lives around him with detached honesty. Through his friendship with the lively but financially unstable Sally Bowles, Chris witnesses the economic hardship and uncertainty faced by many in Berlin during the rise of Nazism. The play explores poverty, dependence, and survival, while Chris records the emotional and social decline of the city without fully intervening in the events he describes.
