You Got Me is a new play about two strangers, Alex and River, stuck in a room. As they try to decipher who or what has confined them, they begin to notice strange happenings. Sentences trailing off, words disappearing, memories fading, the recurring appearance of a mysterious figure. Soon, repetition takes hold: they find themselves stuck in conversations they’ve already had, absurd comic routines with no end in sight, games with rules that neither of them can seem to remember. A tragicomic exploration of memory and identity, You Got Me asks what connects us to other people, what a person becomes without their memories, and where the line between comedy and tragedy falls.
We are looking for a cast to fill the following roles. We are accepting auditions in both self-tape and in-person form – see the audition pack for more details:
Alex: Alex is a university student just entering the world. He is enthusiastic, anxious, insecure, and desperate for human connection and approval. As yet unaccomplished, he is terrified by the thought that he hasn’t done anything with his life, haunted by unrealised dreams and scared of being alone. Male-presenting; gay. Leading role.
River: River is a twenty-three year old cynic. Bordering on misanthropic, they initially reject Alex’s attempts to become friendly, and keep a veneer of indifference to their situation. They distrust people, especially strangers, but secretly want to connect with them. Pensive, contemplative, and always writing in their notebook, River’s facade of indifference collapses as the play goes on. Any gender. Leading role.
The Figure: An enigma. With no lines, the Figure enters at the end of each act to take away parts of the set, and symbolises the unknowns of their situation that torment Alex and River across the play. Minor commitment, with no lines and one slapstick fight scene. Any gender. Fairly low commitment.
Please bear in mind that the above descriptions of gender and sexuality refer only to the gender presentation of the character, not the actor - auditionees are encouraged to audition for whatever character they want, regardless of their gender presentation or sexual orientation.
