Synopsis:
Alf and Rube have questions. Would you notice if you were underwater? What would it be like to be rich? Why has everyone started wearing black?
Crisp Sketches is a playful, Beckettian exploration of personal responsibility and rising authoritarianism, written by MSt Creative Writing student Nathan A. Harris. The play follows Alf and Rube - two strangely co-dependent vagrants as they bicker, ruminate on their shared past, rob strangers, get arrested, and wonder what it would be like to be a fish.
We are casting Three roles:
Alf: A curious old hermit. Loves a bicker. Compulsively fills silences. Overconfident. A little manic. Deeply dependent on Rube. Alf is male-presenting (though we encourage auditions from performers of all gender identities!). Involved in brief onstage slapstick violence.
Rube: A curious, slightly older hermit. Reserved. Feels comfortable in silence. Prone to bouts of anxiety. Deeply dependent on Alf. Rube is male-presenting (though we encourage auditions from performers of all gender identities!). Involved in brief onstage slapstick violence.
Someone/Officer [MULTI-ROLE]: Someone: Busy. In a rush. Somewhere important to be. Swept up by one of Alf’s tricks. Officer: Efficient. Cold. The harsh embodiment of an authoritarian state. Someone / Officer is a smaller (but no less important) role, perfect for performers who are new to Oxford drama or are involved in other productions! Both characters are male-presenting (though we encourage auditions from performers of all gender identities!).
