RED THREADED THEATRE IS LOOKING FOR PASSIONATE COLLABORATORS TO BRING A WILD, REIMAGINED CHINESE OPERA TO LIFE
Suzhen and Zhaoting are in love, but her parents aren't having it. He's poor, she's rich, and his career as a civil servant doesn't seem too promising either. When Zhaoting is thrown into prison on false charges, Suzhen does what any self-respecting heroine would do: she cuts her hair, borrows a robe, and sits the Imperial Examination in disguise. But... as these stories always do, not everything goes to plan. Little did she know she would end up as the highest-scoring applicant! The Emperor is delighted. The palace rejoices. And before she can let anyone know, she’s been named the empire’s most brilliant young official… and betrothed to the Emperor’s favourite daughter (oh shit!).
Translated and adapted from the beloved Huangmeixi opera The Female Prince Consort (女驸马), this anarchic new version takes a bold, international look at a classic of Chinese theatre. Prince Consort Ladygirl is a tale of gender, ambition, and one woman’s spectacularly ill-timed success, reimagined as a bright, wacky opera where the rules never quite apply.
Prince Consort Ladygirl continues Red Threaded Theatre’s commitment to intercultural collaboration and radical reinterpretations of traditional forms. This production merges Chinese opera aesthetics, Western musical theatre energy, and avant-garde playfulness into a singular, cross-cultural experiment.
We are assembling a bold, imaginative creative team for its Hilary Term 2026 (Week 5–8) production, and are now looking for:
Musical Director: A creative and adaptable musician with experience in small-ensemble work or musical theatre. You’ll collaborate with the Director and Musical Supervisors to shape the show’s musical landscape, from rehearsal accompaniment to integrating live and pre-recorded sound. Ideal for: someone excited by cross-genre music, improvisation, and playful sonic experimentation.
Assistant Director: A keen, new voice to collaborate with the Director in rehearsal and help translate complex, intercultural ideas into stage practice. We are especially looking for someone with very little theatre experience but lots of good ideas and passion!
Ideal for: someone with an interest in physical theatre, performance theory, or Chinese/Asian performance traditions.
Stage Manager: The organisational backbone of the show! You’ll manage rehearsal logistics, call times, props, and liaise with the venue to ensure smooth running from tech to curtain call.
Ideal for: someone calm under pressure, detail-oriented, and organised.
Marketing Manager: Help us build our audience! You’ll lead publicity design, social media campaigns, and creative marketing strategies that communicate the show’s bold intercultural vision.
Ideal for: someone with an eye for visuals, a flair for words, and enthusiasm for cross-cultural storytelling, as well as strengths in connecting with people.
We would love to hear from you regardless of experience and are passionate about getting under-represented voices into theatre. If you are excited by excited by intercultural or experimental musical theatre, fill out the form! If you’re intrigued but not sure you ‘tick every box,’ please still apply! We value curiosity, openness, and creative courage above all.
