Lemons, Lemons, Lemons (Lighthouse Productions) - Looking for a MOVEMENT DIRECTOR
Venue/Date of Show: Bidding for BT Studio, WK3-5 Hilary 2026
Deadline: Sunday 26th October
The average person will speak 123,205,750 words in a lifetime. But what if there were a limit? Oliver and Bernadette are about to find out.
Lighthouse Productions are looking for a MOVEMENT DIRECTOR to help us stage Sam Steiner's debut play, Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons, in Weeks 3-5 HT26.
About the play:
Lemons follows a young couple as they struggle to navigate the implementation of the Quietude Bill, a decree that limits all citizens to just 140 words a day. There are some things you can’t say in just 140 words. Forget wedding speeches, or presentations or epic poetry. Songs. The suppression of language threatens the foundations of Bernadette and Oliver’s relationship.
Lemons imagines a world where we’re forced to say less. But it’s the seemingly trivial topics that feed human connection: pet cemeteries, cheese graters, and lemons, lemons, lemons, lemons, lemons.
Under the pressure of this draconian Hush Law, Steiner crystallises the human experience of not being able to communicate how you feel. This is a play which explores not only the wider issues of democracy and free speech, but also the more intimate issues which lie at the centre of our relationships.
Our Vision:
Our creative vision for the play is one which transcends the limits of speech. Under the Hush Law, Oliver and Bernadette must learn to communicate in unconventional ways - with abbreviations and dashes and morse code. So too will our production. Our performance will therefore explore non-verbal forms of communication, chiefly through the use of physical theatre. When words fail, we can communicate through our bodies. Movement is therefore crucial to our method of storytelling. We are looking for a Movement Director to lead the play’s physical storytelling and to tell the language of Oliver and Bernadette onstage.
About the role:
Movement-based storytelling and physical theatre is a key part of this production. You will therefore work closely with the directors and cast to choreograph the stylised movement sequences in this play. It is a role with relatively large commitment; you will be needed for many of the early rehearsals as we piece together the play. However, as we finalise the production, commitment will become more flexible. This is a really exciting opportunity which allows you lots of creative freedom - our directors are open to any ideas - and is a great way to contribute something fresh to student theatre.
