La Voix Humaine

La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) by Jean Cocteau (Full Moon Theatre)

Venue/Date of Show: Bidding for BT Studio, Hilary Week 4

Content Warnings: Discussions of suicide

La Voix Humaine was first performed at the Comédie Française in 1930 and stages a phone call between a woman and her lover who has recently departed. As the woman spirals into despair, the phone is both the only thing tying her to her lover and the very reason for her isolation.
Cocteau’s play ultimately explores the devastating consequences of communication barriers. We’re keen to foreground that Anthony Wood’s translation of Cocteau’s play is just that: a translation. Cocteau himself was a dramatist acutely aware that no two performances are the same. This production will think about what it means to change Cocteau’s French into English, and what is communicated, miscommunicated, or lost along the way.
