Under Milk Wood

To begin at the beginning:
It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courters'-and-rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboatbobbing sea.

In these opening lines, Under Milk Wood introduces the audience to the small Welsh fishing village of Llareggub, the backdrop for Dylan Thomas’ seminal 1954 “play for voices”. Through the eyes of its unique and colourful inhabitants, we see 24 hours in the sleepy town, watching its people go about their day, and peering into their dreams at night. Each of the play’s characters are brought to life by Thomas’ vivid imagery, his delightful and unconventional uses of language singing an ode to community and the beauty of the mundane.

In our production, we want to build a world that is constantly engaging and surprising, always flowing from one moment of wonder or humour into another. We’re hoping to create a show that revels in pure theatrical storytelling, using every tool in our arsenal to bring Thomas’ beautiful language to life. From the point of view of our cast, we want to do this by having a large multi-rolling cast of 10-15, who will form a singular ensemble that invites us into this town, each stepping into the shoes of its inhabitants and narrating the activities of others.
We're looking for a wonderful cast of around 10 performers to make this show possible!

The first round of auditions will be via SELF-TAPES, the deadline for which will be 23:59 on Saturday the 14th of June (next weekend). For more info and self-tape advice, see the file in the drive!

We’d like to stress that no previous experience is required, and we encourage people of all backgrounds to apply, especially those of Welsh heritage or with another connection to the material
