Summer 2012. Three employees sweep up the mess people have left behind in a cinema on the cusp of closing down. Everyday trials and tribulations take centre stage as Sam, Avery and Rose struggle to find themselves in a world being hollowed out and sold off to the highest bidder. Annie Baker’s hilarious, devastating, wonderful play explores how to find connection in an increasingly atomised world.

We are recruiting five actors to perform in Annie Baker’s The Flick:
Sam – thirty-five. Caucasian, male-presenting, East Coast US accent. A long-time employee of the cinema who doesn’t know how he has ended up where he is, aged thirty-five already.
Avery – twenty. African-American, male-presenting, East Coast US accent. A young, idealistic new employee and cinephile desperate to stop the replacement of film projection with digital projection across America, one cinema at a time. This role requires some intimacy, which will be directed by a professional intimacy director.
Rose – twenty-four. Caucasian, female-presenting, East Coast US accent. Young but already jaded, sick of people never seeing the real Rose, but wishes she knew who the real Rose was in the first place. This role requires some intimacy, which will be directed by a professional intimacy director.
Skylar – twenty-six. Any ethnicity, male-presenting, East Coast US accent. A new employee recruited to the cinema near the end of the play. This role would require a smaller amount of advance rehearsal.
The Dreaming Man/Woman – twenties. Any ethnicity or gender. A small but important part with no lines; someone who falls asleep at the cinema and only wakes up after the film has ended. This role would require quite a small amount of advance rehearsal.
