Brian Friel's Translations, presented by Full Moon Theatre
CW: Discussion of death and violence
1830s Donegal, Ireland a hedge school educating the local community is thrust into the consequences of British colonisation when Owen, the prodigal son, returns from Dublin. With him are two British army officers with a plan to map out all of Ireland and in doing so anglicise the original Gaeilge (Irish) place names.
Though written in English, Translations is a play that should be a translated work serving as a haunting reminder of how colonisation silences the native tongue. Its very form enacts the loss it depicts: an Irish story told in the coloniser’s language. At its core, Translations is about the power of language within erasure of culture, a legacy that still actively harms Ireland today.
