Brief Description of Performance: The Crucible is a brutal dramatisation of the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which 19 people were hanged.
Written in the shadow of McCarthyism, it portrays the struggle for integrity amidst a climate of mass hysteria and ruthless judgement.
When a group of girls are caught dancing in the woods, they fend off punishment by accusing others of witchcraft. What starts as self-preservation spirals into mass hysteria: as accusations fly, the accused face impossible choices.
This production foregrounds the injustices at the heart of the play — the racial prejudice directed at Tituba, and the misogyny that traps the young women at its centre.
'One of the true masterpieces of twentieth-century American theatre' - New York Times
CW: violence, themes of racism, and references to hanging and child loss.
The show is estimated to run for approximately 90 minutes with no interval.
