Polly Perks' brother has gone missing in action. The fight? A war of attrition between the small nation of Borogravia and its powerful neighbour Zlobenia that has swallowed almost every young man in the country.

So she cuts her hair, borrows her brother's clothes, and signs up for Duchess and Country. She's fighting alongside a vampire named Maladict, a troll named Carborundum, and an Igor named Igor, along with humans no less strange. At least Polly can count on the fact that she is the only girl of the regiment...
