Late Company by Canadian playwright Jordan Tannahill is a timeless and poignant play that explores grief, bullying and queerness. This densely-packed one-act play explores grief, conflict and forgiveness, as parents Michael and Debora come face-to-face with their deceased son's bully, Curtis, and his parents Bill and Tamara, over a dinner party. Loosely based on the passing of Jamie Hubley in 2011, the 15-year-old son of Canadian Conservative politician Allan Hubley and Wendy Barber, Jamie’s death led to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario enacting the Accepting Schools Act in 2012, an anti-bullying measure providing greater protection for LGBTQ+ students in the province.
First debuting in 2013 by Suburban Beast and surface/underground theatre in Toronto, the play had its European premiere at the Finborough Theatre in London in 2017, and reached Singaporean shores in 2019 with Pangdemonium. Now, the Oxford University Malaysian & Singaporean Students' Association is proud to present our rendition of Late Company as part of our inaugural student production.
Please note that this play discusses heavy themes of homophobia, bullying, mental illness, self-harm and suicide.
