Description: Ulster American by David Ireland is a black, satirical, three-hander comedy that shines a harsh and biting light on complicity in the arts, the commodification of identity and the performative politics that mask ongoing bigotry in the social media age.
Jay is an Oscar-winner, a self-proclaimed ally to all causes that he is supposed to support.
Leigh is an acclaimed English director, a shining star of the London creative elite.
They are waiting for Ruth Davenport, the “Irish writer” of their upcoming play. Conversation spans racism, rape and Alcoholics Anonymous, and while they are constantly performing, they are unobserved by anyone but each other. True colours begin to show.
They congratulate themselves on letting this female voice shine.
Then Ruth enters. Her voice, they find, is not what they expected. Her presence, her opposition, challenges them - their assumptions and their status.
Things begin to unravel. Secrets are exposed. There will be blood.
