Venue/Date of Show: Grove Theatre (Magdalen) / HT26 Week 7
Content Warnings: transphobia, explicit language
Deadline: 17th January
We are excited to announce that Things I Know To Be True has been selected as the inaugural OUDS production at The Grove Theatre, HT26 Week 7!
About the play
Bob and Fran have worked hard to give their four children the opportunities they never had. Now, with the kids ready to make lives of their own, it's time to sit back and smell the roses. But the change of the seasons reveals some shattering truths, leaving us asking whether it's possible to love too much.
Things I Know To Be True is Andrew Bovell's complex and intense portrait of the mechanics of a family – and a marriage – through the eyes of four siblings struggling to define themselves beyond their parents' love and expectations.
About the Grove Theatre
The Grove Theatre is a 160-seat venue at Magdalen College, Oxford. The venue offers exciting technical opportunities in the way of projection, moving lights, and purpose-built acoustics to optimise performance. The college is offering hands-on support, along with 24 hour access to the venue from get-in arrival. This is an ideal production for anyone interested in tech and design.
We are looking for the following roles:
Marketing Manager & Assistants
The Marketing Manager will be responsible for overseeing all areas of marketing, creating a thorough marketing strategy/schedule and delegating tasks to assistants. Assistants will aid the strategic aspects of marketing, as well as perform various marketing tasks to help execute marketing plans. The marketing team will be made up of two groups: one targeted towards students, and the other towards the wider Oxford community and beyond including schools and theatre groups: both to maximise the reach of our show!
Assistant Producer
You will work for our in-house Producer Grace and Production Manager Lucy to carry out all the important behind-the-scenes operational tasks which allow the production to run smoothly. These include, but are by no means limited to: emails, organising rehearsal schedules, room booking, liaising with the Grove Theatre, and overseeing ticket sales.
Stage Manager
You will work backstage during the show to help the actors with cues/ props/ costume changes to ensure the performances run smoothly.
Projectionist
The Grove Theatre offers exciting opportunities in terms of projection which we would like to incorporate into our methods of storytelling, such as filling the stage and set with the continuous memory of words, and imagery of nature to capture the play's themes of growth and change. You will be working alongside our directors in creating and operating those projections.
Composer
We are keen to work with student musicians to create an original score for this production. We are especially interested in utilising string instrumentation to bring out the emotional elements of the play, particularly during the children's monologues.
Lighting Assistants
You will work alongside our Lighting Designer, Patryk, to establish elements such as mood, focus, and visibility in line with the directors’ creative vision. You will also be responsible for operating the lighting during the technical/dress rehearsals and performances
Set Constructors
We have an exciting set design which seeks to realise the two conflicting spaces of this play: the indoor world of family civility, where the children bury their problems so not to disappoint their parents, and the world of the garden - a space which promises something more, a world in which the children can explore their true selves through open monologues and physical theatre. You will help with the construction of this set, making it come alive in the stunning Grove Theatre.
Sound Designer & Assistants
The Sound Designer will be responsible for overseeing the sourcing and editing all sound effects used in the play, along with liaising with our musical composers and delegating tasks to assistants. The sound team will also operate the sound during the technical/dress rehearsals and performances.
Costume Designer
You will work alongside our cast and directors to bring the play's characters to life through costume! You will be responsible for creating mood boards, sourcing costumes and making adjustments if necessary.
No prior experience is needed; we are applying to be an OUTTS training show to extend opportunities to a wider community of students looking to get technical experience on a large-scale production.
