ABOUT THE SHOW
Songs For A New World lies somewhere between musical and song cycle: without an overall narrative, the musical paints a picture of society in all its diversity and weirdness through a series of individual stories.
Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue to meet a startling array of characters ranging from a young man who has determined that basket-ball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage.
THE PRODUCTION
There are two main aspects to our production.
Firstly, we will be placing the actors and musicians into the same space, moving them around with each other in what I might have called a "communal sonic harmony" six months ago, and what I'd call a "cool blob" now. In all seriousness though, the idea is to put the text and music in one visual context, and by avoiding costuming or further visual characterisation, to emphasise this text-music relationship to the maximum.
Secondly, I would like to draw in the stories of people in Oxford to draw a direct parallel between people in the musical, and real faces, familiar and unfamiliar. Street interviews will be conducted, recorded, and projected in the space during the pre-show and interval. Furthermore, transcripts of interviews will be printed in programmes. I hope that, by drawing in the community in this way and allowing them to express their identity into this beautifully sprawling mess of a musical, we can draw a far more personal understanding of what it means to know a person, and what it means to hold an identity.
CONCLUSION
Seabass Theatre is an inclusive company, and we encourage everyone to apply, especially Freshers and people from backgrounds usually underrepresented in Oxford Drama. In light of current events, we would like to emphasise our commitment to diversity and inclusion and actively encourage LGBTQ+, BAME, disabled, and state-school educated creatives to apply to this crew call. There is no minimum experience level.
