'Shooting Hedda Gabler' is Nina Segal's modern response to Ibsen's play and to the Me Too movement (specifically as it relates to the entertainment industry). Set on a film set for a new adaption of 'Hedda Gabler', the play is a complex exploration of the systems which allow for and uphold abuses of power, the exploitation of vulnerable women in the entertainment industry, the instability of reality and fiction, and the personal struggles maintained from Ibsen's play of addiction, identity, entrapment, powerlessness, and a sense of existential emptiness.
In the several scenes which take place as the film is shooting, our production will film the action live onstage and project it onto a screen above the actors' heads, as if the audience were watching the film in a cinema. Through this we will explore the camera as a representation of power and a tool through which truth is revealed or obscured, inspecting power structures within the world of the play and the entertainment industry.
