Under Milk Wood (Cartesian Productions)
Venue/Dates of Show: Keble O'Reilly Wk5
Deadline: 13/10/25
Audition Type: In-person
To begin at the beginning:
It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courters'-and-rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboatbobbing sea.
Cartesian Production are looking for around 5 more lovely performers to fill out our multi-rolling ensemble cast for Dylan Thomas’ seminal “play for voices”.
Under Milk Wood depicts 24 hours in the life of the sleepy Welsh town of Llareggub and its eclectic inhabitants, watching them go about their day, and peering into their dreams at night. A prismatic portrait of a mundane community and its extraordinary individuals, the play is steeped in Thomas’ beautiful and lyrical language, painting his world in vivid detail. Our staging of the radio play is one that revels in pure theatrical storytelling, with constant opportunities for fun and inventiveness, and a large cast working together as an ensemble to capture the play's over 50 characters!
Auditions will be in-person, on the afternoon of Monday 13th October at New College's Clore Music Studios (which can be found on Mansfield Road). These will be 50 minute group auditions, set up like a mini-rehearsal, doing some exercises and then working on a chunk of text as an ensemble. We're hoping to build a short scene over the course of the slot, trying to develop clear and recognisable characters and interesting moments of visual theatre. You won't need to put on a Welsh accent for the show, so don't worry if you're concerned about that.
